For PIO card holders the deadline to convert the PIO card to OCI card has been extended to 31st March 2016, it’s recommended that you avail of this opportunity and get the change done, it’s currently being done free of charge and there is a possibility that a charge will be applicable post the deadline date.
You should also get your PIO card converted to avoid potentially having your travel plans disrupted at a later date.
In due course, the government may also make the change mandatory, the process has also been simplified and the application can be made in the jurisdiction in which you are residing.
There is also another question often asked by folks who have got the “VALID FOREVER” stamp on their PIO card, there is a newer notification which will supersede the previous notification, so please have the PIO converted to OCI at the earliest.
For any doubts please consult your local FRRO / OCI office, overseas mission or consulate on specific procedures and requirements, as these may vary.
